Days of Noah

Luk 17:24  For as the lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one side to the other, so will the Son of Man be in his day.
Luk 17:25  But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.
Luk 17:26  Just as it was in the days of Noah, so will it be in the days of the Son of Man.
Luk 17:27  They were eating and drinking and marrying and being given in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all.

We have this promise in genesis:-

Gen 8:20  Then Noah built an altar to the LORD and took some of every clean animal and some of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar.
Gen 8:21  And when the LORD smelled the pleasing aroma, the LORD said in his heart, "I will never again curse the ground because of man, for the intention of man's heart is evil from his youth. Neither will I ever again strike down every living creature as I have done.
Gen 8:22  While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease."

So we know that the worsening weather conditions that we are beginning to experience are not the instruments of the end of the age. However, we ought to ponder this - that from the time of the flood abating, the polar ice-caps came into existence and the climate change was immense compared to pre-flood conditions. We have had around 5,000 years of these conditions now. Now, however, things are changing and no-one has a thorough explanation for it all. Israel is back in the Land and many alive today are probably going to witness the return of the Lord. With unprecedented communication technology, the preaching of the gospel to the entire world prior to the return of the King, the Lord, Jesus Christ, is not a problem.

Who

Some say America is babylon. Well, New York may be mystery babylon, it might not be, but to say the whole of the USA is babylon, I am not so happy with that.

To identify babylon, more importantly, mystery babylon, we need to look at her characteristics.

1. International Trade
It's not just America that is involved in global trading, it is by definition all those coastal sea port/cities around the globe.

Rev 18:17  For in a single hour all this wealth has been laid waste." And all shipmasters and seafaring men, sailors and all whose trade is on the sea, stood far off

2. Arms
Jer 51:49  Babylon must fall for the slain of Israel, just as for Babylon have fallen the slain of all the earth.
(A major part of the UK's economy is involved in Arms sales.)

3. Immoral - this applies to mystery babylon.
Rev 18:3  For all nations have drunk the wine of the passion of her sexual immorality, and the kings of the earth have committed immorality with her, and the merchants of the earth have grown rich from the power of her luxurious living."
The key here is that mystery babylon is not chaste, she goes with anyone. International finance comes to mind.

4. She resists the gospel of Christ - again, mystery babylon
Rev 18:24  And in her was found the blood of prophets and of saints, and of all who have been slain on earth."

Wherever you find resistance to the gospel of Christ being sanctioned by the authorities (or even local people, work colleagues, management, petty officials, etc, who are lost in the harlot's enticements), you have found mystery babylon. Now that should open your eyes.

To really understand all this requires a spirit of revelation - otherwise you just get freaked by what you are considering. Stay in the Way and you will be kept safe from the harlot's clutches.
Rev 18:1  After this I saw another angel coming down from heaven, having great authority, and the earth was made bright with his glory.
Rev 18:2  And he called out with a mighty voice, "Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great! She has become a dwelling place for demons, a haunt for every unclean spirit, a haunt for every unclean bird, a haunt for every unclean and detestable beast.
Rev 18:3  For all nations have drunk the wine of the passion of her sexual immorality, and the kings of the earth have committed immorality with her, and the merchants of the earth have grown rich from the power of her luxurious living."

So, in conclusion, perhaps there are different facets to babylon. The jeremiah 51:42 prophecy, the seas coming up on babylon, is perhaps just one facet and may be already entirely fulfilled and be just poetical language. However, the reality of the sea levels rising and endangering coastal cities is real enough as is the growing problem of water supply for many cities.

Now and then

Luk 4:17  And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,
Luk 4:18  "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
Luk 4:19  to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."
Luk 4:20  And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him.
Luk 4:21  And he began to say to them, "Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing."

Note that the Lord stops at "to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." in the text in Luke, above.

Isa 61:1  The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
Isa 61:2  to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn;
Isa 61:3  to grant to those who mourn in Zion-- to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified.

However, in Isaiah he on goes to "and the day of vengeance of our God".

Why does he stop? Well, because the day of vengeance was not yet. So we see that prophecy has a time element to it that is not always contiguous. Was the day of vengeance AD 70. I don't think so, I think it refers to the 'day of the Lord' that is coming. Whichever of these is correct, there is a time interval and the Lord's clear use of it, from his own mouth, confirms that prophecy cannot always be compartmentalised to refer to just one specific fulfillment time/era.

Which brings me by way of preamble to:-

Jer 51:42  The sea has come up on Babylon; she is covered with its tumultuous waves.
Jer 51:43  Her cities have become a horror, a land of drought and a desert, a land in which no one dwells, and through which no son of man passes.
Jer 51:44  And I will punish Bel in Babylon, and take out of his mouth what he has swallowed. The nations shall no longer flow to him; the wall of Babylon has fallen.

You can kind of apply the above to ancient babylon but it fits the modern time much better.

However, the following does refer to ancient babylon :-

Jer 51:45  "Go out of the midst of her, my people! Let every one save his life from the fierce anger of the LORD!
Jer 51:46  Let not your heart faint, and be not fearful at the report heard in the land, when a report comes in one year and afterward a report in another year, and violence is in the land, and ruler is against ruler.

When the Lord's people heard these reports, it was time to keep a cool head but to get ready to flee from babylon.

Worn out

In the end, the earth will be worn out, just like a garment. We are not there yet because that time awaits the return of the Lord ("the heavens vanish like smoke")

Isa 51:5  My righteousness draws near, my salvation has gone out, and my arms will judge the peoples; the coastlands hope for me, and for my arm they wait.
Isa 51:6  Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look at the earth beneath; for the heavens vanish like smokethe earth will wear out like a garment, and they who dwell in it will die in like manner; but my salvation will be forever, and my righteousness will never be dismayed.
Isa 51:7  "Listen to me, you who know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law; fear not the reproach of man, nor be dismayed at their revilings.
Isa 51:8  For the moth will eat them up like a garment, and the worm will eat them like wool; but my righteousness will be forever, and my salvation to all generations.

Man made or Divine Judgement - or both!

I am just adding a note here - what is going on with the weather is divinely decreed. It's happening to babylon and it's probably a judgement on the insane levels of trading and greed that have captured the hearts of men such that they spurn the gospel of Christ. You cannot serve the Lord and mammon. Mammon is trying to build her defences but I think she knows by now it is a hopeless task. So she is just lulling the world to sleep via the media - but the world is going to wake up pretty soon.

Truth is, men don't want to even consider that what is happening is a divine decree against babylon. Babylon's own activities may be the very cause:-

Isa 24:19  The earth is utterly broken, the earth is split apart, the earth is violently shaken.
Isa 24:20  The earth staggers like a drunken man; it sways like a hut; its transgression lies heavy upon it, and it falls, and will not rise again.

The waves are coming up upon babylon, for sure

Jer 51:42  The sea has come up on Babylon; she is covered with its tumultuous waves.
Jer 51:43  Her cities have become a horror, a land of drought and a desert, a land in which no one dwells, and through which no son of man passes.

Bible commentators liken these waves to the Median invaders and this is probably its most direct application. However, like many prophecies in scripture, there is often a later fulfillment intended also.

Methane

Methane Risk

http://www.sustainablebusiness.com/index.cfm/go/news.display/id/24031

Data published in the journal Nature suggests there may be as much as 4 billion tons of methane gas trapped beneath the ice at the South Pole.
That's about the same amount as the methane trapped beneath the fast-melting ice in the northern Arctic, which has already started to be released. Methane is a greenhouse gas that is 72 times more potent than carbon dioxide in the short term.

Scientists that model the effects of carbon on climate change "suggest it will be hell on Earth by 2100. But in calculating the rate and amount of methane and carbon released from Arctic sources, they didn't even add in the effect of accelerated warming from the permafrost releases themselves. In other words, they looked at greenhouse gas emissions from conventional sources only, despite the fact that releases from methane feedbacks are equivalent to those from fossil fuels," notes author John Atcheson, in his article, "We Are Writing an Epilogue to the World We Knew."
"So yeah, Hell is coming, but it's coming a lot faster than any predictions you've see so far from the scientific community," he says.

Antarctica

Antarctica is melting

http://science.howstuffworks.com/environmental/earth/geophysics/question473.htm

The main ice covered landmass is Antarctica at the South Pole, with about 90 percent of the world's ice (and 70 percent of its fresh water). Antarctica is covered with ice an average of 2,133 meters (7,000 feet) thick. If all of the Antarctic ice melted, sea levels around the world would rise about 61 meters (200 feet). But the average temperature in Antarctica is -37°C, so the ice there is in no danger of melting. In fact in most parts of the continent it never gets above freezing.

However
http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/20100108_Is_Antarctica_Melting.html

Meanwhile, measurements from the Grace satellites confirm that Antarctica is losing mass 11. Isabella Velicogna of JPL and the University of California, Irvine, uses Grace data to weigh the Antarctic ice sheet from space. Her work shows that the ice sheet is not only losing mass, but it is losing mass at an accelerating rate. "The important message is that it is not a linear trend. A linear trend means you have the same mass loss every year. The fact that it’s above linear, this is the important idea, that ice loss is increasing with time," she says. And she points out that it isn’t just the Grace data that show accelerating loss; the radar data do, too. "It isn't just one type of measurement. It's a series of independent measurements that are giving the same results, which makes it more robust."

Babylon by the Sea

from http://www.unisdr.org/files/28240_rcreport.pdf :-

"The increasing concentration of people, economic activities and assets in urban areas
usually brings much increased disaster risks and also increasing climate change risks.
Cities generate most of the world’s wealth and innovation - but also waste, greenhouse gas
pollution and many other causes of climate change and hazards.
Many of the world’s major metropolises are coastal cities prone to flooding and erosion. Many
others are located in drought-prone areas and are already suffering from water scarcity."

OK, that's the UN report, how about the jeremiah prophecy? :-

Jer 51:42  The sea has come up on Babylon; she is covered with its tumultuous waves.
Jer 51:43  Her cities have become a horror, a land of drought and a desert, a land in which no one dwells, and through which no son of man passes.

http://www.unisdr.org/we/inform/publications/28240 makes for interesting viewing - babylon knows trouble is coming.

My advice - work the land, get away from the coastal cities. Get out of money, get into muck. A real day's work for a change. Cities are lonely places, go back to your roots in the countryside.

.....

The UN report says "Cities generate most of the world’s wealth and innovation". mmm. Not sure about this, sounds like a way of justifying babylon to me.

I think what they mean is "we like cities because the country folk see right through us"!

Did Isaac Newton live in a big city or did he spend his entire life in his mum's house in the country?

Hoho. (he lived in the country in his mum's house!).

Matthew 24 and Luke 21 - separate audience targets

Luk 21:25  "And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves,
Luk 21:26  people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world. For the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

You will not find any mention of "the roaring of the sea and the waves" in Matthew 24 (or Mark 13) because Matthew is addressing those living in physical Israel at the end time. The roaring of the sea and the waves seems to be addressed to the gentile world. (Indeed, the weather seems to be rather favourable to Israel now she is back in the land).

Mat 24:14  And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.
Mat 24:15  "So when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand),
Mat 24:16  then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.

You will not find any mention of "the abomination of desolation" in Luke 21 because this event will be witnessed in the physical land of Israel and residents in Judea are instructed to flee.
Mat 24:20  "Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a Sabbath." Such Sabbath laws will only be in force in physical Israel.

The Matthew discourse was spoken directly, in private, to his disciples on the Mount of Olives:-

Mat 24:3  As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, "Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the close of the age?

However, in Luke:-

Luk 21:5  And while some were speaking of the temple, how it was adorned with noble stones and offerings, he said,
Luk 21:6  "As for these things that you see, the days will come when there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down."
Luk 21:7  And they asked him, "Teacher, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when these things are about to take place?"
Luk 21:8  And he said, "See that you are not led astray. For many will come in my name, saying, 'I am he!' and, 'The time is at hand!' Do not go after them.

"these things that you see" were the stones of the temple and the Lord then answers their questions - no mention of the mount of olives or privacy. However, it appears that this may just be that Luke does not record that they moved over to the mount of olives. and who the 'they' were in Luke 21:7.

Matthew and Luke both agree on this, though:-

Luk 21:27  And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
Mat 24:30  Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

So the shaking of the heaven and the earth seems to affect everyone greatly but Matthew doesn't even mention it! This must have something to do with Jerusalem being the very centre of the Universe in time and space. Israel's problem, though, is going to be the 'abomination of desolation'.

Sea View

Jer 51:42  The sea has come up on Babylon; she is covered with its tumultuous waves.

My guess is that this refers to all the cities of the earth that are located by the sea:-

Here are just some of them:-

Guangzhou, China
New York and Newark, U.S.
Kolkata, India
Shanghai, China
Tianjin, China
Tokyo, Japan
Alexandria, Egypt
Hong Kong, China
Bangkok, Thailand
Ningbo, China
Miami, Florida, U.S
New Orleans, Louisiana, U.S.
Osaka-Kobe, Japan
Mumbai, India
Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Rotterdam, The Netherlands
Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
Nagoya, Japan
Qingdao, China

According to the United Nations, by 2050 more than 6 billion people are expected to live in cities.  Over half of the world's largest cities are ports - say no more.

There are over 130 port cities around the world at risk!

This is only the beginning of this prophecy. Selah (pause for thought).

.................................................................

Jer 51:47  "Therefore, behold, the days are coming when I will punish the images of Babylon; her whole land shall be put to shame, and all her slain shall fall in the midst of her.
Jer 51:48  Then the heavens and the earth, and all that is in them, shall sing for joy over Babylon, for the destroyers shall come against them out of the north, declares the LORD.
Jer 51:49  Babylon must fall for the slain of Israel, just as for Babylon have fallen the slain of all the earth.
Jer 51:50  "You who have escaped from the sword, go, do not stand still! Remember the LORD from far away, and let Jerusalem come into your mind:
Jer 51:51  'We are put to shame, for we have heard reproach; dishonor has covered our face, for foreigners have come into the holy places of the LORD's house.'
Jer 51:52  "Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will execute judgment upon her images, and through all her land the wounded shall groan.
Jer 51:53  Though Babylon should mount up to heaven, and though she should fortify her strong height, yet destroyers would come from me against her, declares the LORD.
Jer 51:54  "A voice! A cry from Babylon! The noise of great destruction from the land of the Chaldeans!
Jer 51:55  For the LORD is laying Babylon waste and stilling her mighty voice. Their waves roar like many waters; the noise of their voice is raised,
Jer 51:56  for a destroyer has come upon her, upon Babylon; her warriors are taken; their bows are broken in pieces, for the LORD is a God of recompense; he will surely repay.
Jer 51:57  I will make drunk her officials and her wise men, her governors, her commanders, and her warriors; they shall sleep a perpetual sleep and not wake, declares the King, whose name is the LORD of hosts.
Jer 51:58  "Thus says the LORD of hosts: The broad wall of Babylon shall be leveled to the ground, and her high gates shall be burned with fire. The peoples labor for nothing, and the nations weary themselves only for fire."

Good heavens

Scripture tells us the Lord stretched out the heavens like a curtain (possibly a lot faster than the speed of light which may also explain how we can see them*).

It also tells us that the heavens shall "vanish like smoke". Look at the text in Isaiah 51:6 in yellow, shown below - it is addressing "you who know righteousness". These people appear to be in mid air - "look at the earth beneath".

Isa 51:4  "Give attention to me, my people, and give ear to me, my nation; for a law will go out from me, and I will set my justice for a light to the peoples.
Isa 51:5  My righteousness draws near, my salvation has gone out, and my arms will judge the peoples; the coastlands hope for me, and for my arm they wait.
Isa 51:6  Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look at the earth beneath; for the heavens vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment, and they who dwell in it will die in like manner; but my salvation will be forever, and my righteousness will never be dismayed.
Isa 51:7  "Listen to me, you who know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law; fear not the reproach of man, nor be dismayed at their revilings.
Isa 51:8  For the moth will eat them up like a garment, and the worm will eat them like wool; but my righteousness will be forever, and my salvation to all generations."

I don't really buy that pre-trib rapture stuff but there is something here - "my salvation has gone out".
First of all, though, the man of sin must be revealed as Thessalonians makes clear.

2Th 2:3  Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction,
2Th 2:4  who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God.

'rebellion' is:-

ἀποστασία
apostasia
ap-os-tas-ee'-ah
Feminine of the same as G647; defection from truth (properly the state), (“apostasy”): - falling away, forsake.

Perhaps we see something of this coming rebellion in the phrase "fear not the reproach of man, nor be dismayed at their revilings" in the passage above? :-

So, we who believe have that coming at us. Nothing new, then :).

However, we are wise to endure all this :-

Heb 12:26  At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, "Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens."
Heb 12:27  This phrase, "Yet once more," indicates the removal of things that are shaken--that is, things that have been made--in order that the things that cannot be shaken may remain.
Heb 12:28  Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe,
Heb 12:29  for our God is a consuming fire.

........................................................

*The cosmic background radiation indicates we are at the centre of the universe. The physics of the universe out there may be 'universally' quite different to what it is at the centre. Galaxies at the far edge of what we can see of the universe appear to be in the same well formed state as our own - this is in line with the universe being stretched out as some incredible speed after it was initially created. Big bang would have galaxies still developing towards the edge of the expansion vector. The more the evidence comes in, the more we understand that scientists should have stuck to the scriptural revelation in the first place. Scripture tells us He stretched out the heavens by 'His understanding'. If scientists were to start thinking along the lines I propose, they would be freer to come up with something nearer to an explanation, now that they could factor in divine intelligence, 'His understanding'.

Wavy line

Luk 21:25  "And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves,
Luk 21:26  people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world. For the powers of the heavens will be shaken."

Global warming, then it's climate change, now weather weirding.

The scripture tells us what is really going to happen at the very end -
"the powers of the heavens will be shaken."

It also prophesies what may be happening right now -
Jer 51:42  The sea has come up on Babylon; she is covered with its tumultuous waves.

..............................

The fig tree, a symbol of Israel. Israel is beginning to bud as the Lord is punishing her present day oppressors. This ties in with the figure of speech "Look at the fig tree, and all the trees", below, that tells us to straighten up and to watch, for He is near.

Luk 21:28  Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near."
Luk 21:29  And he told them a parable: "Look at the fig tree, and all the trees.
Luk 21:30  As soon as they come out in leaf, you see for yourselves and know that the summer is already near.
Luk 21:31  So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near.
Luk 21:32  Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all has taken place.
Luk 21:33  Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
Luk 21:34  "But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap.
Luk 21:35  For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth.
Luk 21:36  But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man."

It might be worth noting "Look at the fig tree, and all the trees". Does 'all the trees' also mean all the nations on the earth? China seems to have been a dormant nation/civilization time out of mind but look at her now, she is certainly 'out in leaf'.

....................................

Luk 21:8  And he said, "See that you are not led astray. For many will come in my name, saying, 'I am he!' and, 'The time is at hand!' Do not go after them.

So the question we have to ask ourselves is:-

Are these things actually happening.
Mar 13:24  "But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light,
Mar 13:25  and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken".
What we are seeing at present cannot be the great shaking of the powers in the heavens, as the great tribulation has not yet occurred.

However, we may be witnessing the words written in Jeremiah -
Jer 51:42  The sea has come up on Babylon; she is covered with its tumultuous waves.

....................................
