Mega

This post is the result of reading this link:-

http://crisisboom.com/2011/02/25/earthquakes-volcanoes-prophecy/

I never noticed until today that, regarding the end times, Matthew and Mark refer to earthquakes but Luke refers to "MEGA" earthquakes.
This seems to again emphasize the fact that Luke's account is aimed at the wider world, beyond the Mediterranean, the Pacific ring of Fire, et al.

ESV Luk 21:11  There will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven.

"great"
μέγας
megas
meg'-as
Including the prolonged forms, femine μεγάλη megalē, plural μέγάλοι megaloi, etc.; compare also G3176, G3187], big (literally or figuratively, in a very wide application): - (+ fear) exceedingly, great (-est), high, large, loud, mighty, + (be) sore (afraid), strong, X to years.

Luke also mentions in conjunction with these mega earthquakes "terrors and great signs from heaven." Matthew and Mark don't make this connection directly with the earthquakes.

Early days with this post. Is Luke referring to a later time period on account of the signs from heaven or is it just additional information? I don't know..yet.

Israel is being regathered from the nations, perhaps her protection by the Almighty at this present time means she is exempt from cosmic dangers faced by the wider, gentile, world that is beyond the boundaries of the promised land specified to Abraham ( and the eastern boundary was the great river, the euphrates, where the olive groves stop, that's a fact ).

Now, protection from cosmic events to a specific region of the earth may seem fanciful to some but consider this...
Consider the Tunguska* explosion in Siberia at the beginn ing of the 20th century? If this had happened to the holy land, all would be lost, no fulfillment of scripture,... no resurrection of the dead at the last trumpet, no fountain of salvation opened for earthly Israel as the book of Romans details is to come . No Israel, no holy land restored, just a devastation.

Folks, we are in this right now. It is high time to pray that you and I can escape what is coming. Those of us living beyond the borders of the holy land assigned to Abraham may in fact be in much greater potential  danger than we suspect.

Matthew says "24:29, Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from the heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:
Mat 24:30  Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory

The cosmic signs in Matthew are AFTER the tribulation.

Luke says, chapter 21:-

11, And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences [dearths and deaths]; and things that fill with fear and great signs shall there be from heaven.

( now go back 2000 years in time to the time this gospel was written "But before all these" )

12, But before all these, they shall lay their hands upon you, and persecute you, delivering you up unto the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought up to kings and rulers for My name's sake.
24, And they shall fall by the mouth of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down by the nations, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.

( Now back to the present day or the time rapidly approaching "until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled" )

25, And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves rage;

So, lets just recap:-

Luk 21:10  Then he said to them, "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.
Luk 21:11  There will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven.

is the same time as Luke 21:25 (after the times of the gentiles) :-

Luk 21:24  They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led captive among all nations, and Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
Luk 21:25  "And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves,
Luk 21:26  people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world. For the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
Luk 21:27  And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

So looks like the same time period in Luke as Matthew but no mention of the the great tribulation by Luke!!! Why? Because the tribulation affects primarily the holy land, the subject of Matthew and Marks Olivet discourse.

I am going to say that again -  no mention of the the "great tribulation" by Luke!

In fact, no mention of "the abominationof desolation" for that matter, either!

As observed elsewhere on this blog, only Luke mentions the marine nightmare "and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves rage".

The more one looks into this, the clearer it becomes that Luke's target audience are the gentile nations beyond the holy land and it's environs round about.

Selah ..pause for deep thought

..........................................

In Luke its tough, the gospel/church age -
Luke 21:12, But before all these, they shall lay their hands upon you, and persecute you, delivering you up unto the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought up to kings and rulers for My name's sake.
13, And it shall turn out to you for a testimony."

In Matthew 24 :9/10, its death and tribulation  -
9", Then shall they deliver you up unto tribulation, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated by all nations on account of My name's sake.
10, And then shall many stumble, and will deliver up one another, and shall hate one another.

Maybe we escape great tribulation in the western world of christendom and it's satellites, who knows. Christians in the lands surrounding Israel don't appear to be so fortunate, if that is the right term. However,

Rev 12:12  Therefore, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!"

"But woe to you, O earth and sea," is very reminiscent of Luke ("and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves rage"), so the West/Christendom is not about to get off lightly, methinks (and never has since the church spread West).

Hence in Luke it says:-    21:36, Watch ye therefore, praying in every season, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that are about to come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man

Again, only in Luke is the idea of ESCAPE tied to watching.

*Tunguska - some think this had something to do with Nicolai Tesla, I don't totally discount that :)
